DAYTON, OHIO, August 29, 2013—Your Better Business Bureau’s Center for Business and Consumer Ethics, Inc. (CBCE) was recently awarded a grant from GE Capital Retail Bank’s Community Grant Program. Acceptance of this grant enables the CBCE to empower our community to make wiser marketplace decisions through financial education and credit awareness.
Specifically, GE Capital Retail Bank’s Community Grant supports the Teen Smart and Smart Consumer financial education programs. The Teen Smart and Smart Consumer programs educate Miami Valley high school and college students about the impact their decisions have on their personal financial well-being. Teen Smart reinforces Ohio’s standards for financial literacy in high schools’ current curriculums and Smart Consumer focuses on information college students may not receive in their courses. These one-hour, interactive programs bring everyday marketplace challenges to the forefront. The classes provide information about managing credit, budgeting and saving, identity theft and cell phone contracts.
Through support from GE Capital Retail Bank, the CBCE provides young consumers a chance to educate themselves on the importance of being financially prepared and responsible as they learn money-management skills for the real world. The CBCE has reached more than 7,800 individuals since Teen Smart’s/Smart Consumer’s inception five years ago.
Since 2008, GE Capital Retail Bank has provided volunteers and donations to support teen financial education programs sponsored by the CBCE. Nancy Slezak, community relations manager for GE Capital Retail Bank, said, “In today’s complex market, it’s important for all of us to become financially literate and especially to establish good credit habits early. We’ve had favorable feedback from the students about the program.”
