DAYTON, OHIO, August 14, 2012—The heating and air conditioning industry has been an active industry for your Better Business Bureau. In fact, it was among your BBB’s top ten complained and inquired about industries last year. Unfortunately, there are many in the industry that don’t have customers’ best interests in mind. Your BBB has already received many calls about this industry this year. It has provided people with nearly 15,000 business reviews on companies in the industry and handled nearly 60 complaints this year locally. Today, your BBB shares a list of Miami Valley heating and air conditioning companies that have earned F ratings, the organization’s lowest rating.
John North, BBB president and CEO, says, “There are some fantastic heating and air conditioning companies in the Miami Valley. I know if I asked these trustworthy companies into my home to fix heating and air conditioning concerns, their service and products would be top-notch. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with every company in the industry. A few tarnish the reputation of the whole industry. So, I advise you to check companies out before hiring them. Your BBB can provide a list of BBB Accredited Businesses in the industry or business reviews on companies you’re considering. Visit www.bbb.org or call (937) 222-5825 or (800) 776-5301.”
Today, your Better Business Bureau names seven local heating and air conditioning companies with F ratings. Your BBB assigns letter grades to local businesses ranging from A+ to F. The letter grade system represents your BBB’s degree of confidence businesses are operating in trustworthy manners and will make good faith efforts to resolve customer concerns. Typically, businesses with F ratings have an unanswered and/or unresolved complaint(s) or patterns of complaints that reflect failure by the businesses to deal with the causes of customer problems. Your BBB acknowledges it’s not as much about the number of complaints a company has, but how they handle complaints. (The list was accurate as of August 14, 2012.)

When selecting a heating and air conditioning company, your BBB advises you:
· Ask friends and family for recommendations.
· Shop around and compare at least three companies.
· Request bids detailing the work to be done, materials needed, cost and payment terms.
· Consider reputation, years of service and services provided, as well as cost.
· Be sure companies are licensed, insured and bonded and determine if they’ll pull required inspection permits.
· Watch out for companies offering quick solutions or using misleading statements, high-pressure or scare tactics.
· Don’t be afraid to say no or get a second opinion if large repairs are recommended.
· Get everything in writing, including the contract, warranty and guarantee.
· Ask if the company offers an annual maintenance program.
· Read the contract thoroughly, don’t sign anything until you understand it and keep a copy for your record.
John North said, “I recommend you work with BBB Accredited Businesses. Accredited Businesses must have a B rating or higher and respond to complaints filed against them. They strive to do business the right way and agree to adhere to standards of trust, so they can better differentiate themselves in a competitive marketplace.”
